Welcome to Computer Lab
All elementary students from kindergarten through fifth grade attend Computer Lab one day each week. Our lower grade students, kindergarten and first grade, attend a 30-minute class, and our upper grade students, second grade through fifth grade, receive 45-minutes of instruction.
During class, students will be exposed to today's most popular and useful computer applications. They will watch and listen as tools and techniques are demonstrated on an 84" display, and then emulate what they have learned on their individual notebook PCs.
Projects will range from simple eye-to-hand and hand-to-screen exercises that help our younger students understand the spatial relationship of their screen and their mouse, to the complexities of word processing, spreadsheets, and multimedia presentations that our older students may then apply to their homeroom assignments. Second through fifth grade students will also learn how to safely navigate the Internet for the purpose of conducting project research.
At the end of each class, all students will save their work within their own folders on our school network. Grades are given daily and are based on application and execution: application being part effort and part positive attitude, and execution being part proficiency, part creativity and the end result.
Because I cannot assume that every one of our students has access to a computer with our specific programs at home, I do not assign any work to be done outside of class. This makes consistent attendance in Computer Lab vital in order for our students to be able to learn, perform, and complete all of their projects. If a student misses Computer Lab it can hold back the entire class as that one student tries to catch up. Sometimes an absent student can't be caught up, and therefore has to forgo the missed assignment permanently. Incomplete work caused by an absence in Computer Lab will not be graded; however, the missed class time itself can have negative effects later on when that missing knowledge is needed for related projects. While I understand and agree with keeping an ill child out of school, please keep in mind that pulling a healthy child out of Computer Lab for a scheduled appointment or a family vacation may have lasting negative effects on a student's Computer Lab progress. To aid in this matter, here are each class' Computer Lab schedules:
