Physical Education Program

 

The aim of physical education in the elementary years is to facilitate physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development (play). The aim of P.E. is to promote a healthy and active lifestyle for students. By doing so it helps advocate activities that are not only enjoyable but also contributes to a healthy lifestyle.

 

In Pre-Kindergarten the emphasis is on individual gross motor skills development and movement activities with a focus on FUN and PLAY. The activities in the Pre-k Physical Education class introduces loco motor skills such as running, leaping, hopping, jumping, skipping, galloping, sliding, chasing, fleeing and dodging. Non-locomotor skills include bending, turning, twisting and swinging.

 

Pre-Kindergarten Units

  • Learn to take turns

  • Learn to win, lose, or be caught gracefully

  • Follow directions / Safety concerns for self and others

  • Exploring with balls: catching, throwing, bouncing, rolling, and dribbling

  • Exploring with bean bags: throwing and tossing

  • Mighty muscles (strength activities)

  • Can you jump?  (jump rope activities)

  • Paddle play

  • Parachute power

  • Intro to kickball

  • Intro to T-ball

Students in Kindergarten thru 5th grade are helped to development gross-motor skills as well as manipulative and non-manipulative skills which enables them to participate in a variety of physical activities. All physical activities will include the components of fitness: flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and cardiovascular endurance.

Dress Code

  • All students must wear appropriate footwear for outside activities (a safety issue).

  • Fourth and fifth grade students must dress out for P.E. class in red shorts and a white OSLS T-shirt (from True Grits).

 

Excused participation

  • A note from a Parent/Doctor is mandatory to be excused from P.E. participation.

 

Grading Policy

  • Participation in class (50%).

  • Sportsmanship and Effort (25%).

  • Proper P.E. dress - see Dress Code above (25%)
